Here is my follow-up to “How to Detoxify Your Body”.

Although, some may not have gone through the detoxification process, this article is meant to provide a point of reference in making positive, healthy changes to your diet regardless. Just making small adaptations or additions to your diet can reap a world of benefits in itself. If you have gone through the detox process, then this article will provide the guidance in re-introducing foods back into your system. I strongly believe that if you are serious about making life changes in your dietary habits, it is best to do the detoxification first, so that way your body has been cleansed and is ready for all the good foods and their nutrients and will be prepared to optimally absorb them.

I just want to note a couple of things and then onto the good stuff:

First, you will probably experience a certain lack of hunger or appetite after you have gone through the detox process and this is perfectly normal as your body is still in it’s state of ketosis and has adapted to being without food. One of the things you will most likely notice when you first eat is how intense the flavor of your food is (whether bad or good).

Second, you may even feel that you have to “force” yourself to eat your meals at first. Remember while fasting, your stomach has shrunken significantly, so the amount of food it will store is also lessened (do you like the tone of your belly muscles after the fast :-)?). You will notice that you do not need to or even want to eat as much as you use to before. The body will need time to adjust and is very “delicate” in the beginning, so it is very important not to fill yourself up with the same damaging diet that you worked so hard to negate.

Third, keep in mind that while fasting, your body stopped “wasting” it’s energy on constantly digesting food and has shifted instead to cleansing and repairing itself during the process. So expect after your initial meals to feel a little tired, because now your body will start to shift its resources back to digesting food. If you take proper care and precautions, the benefits of the fast can last for quite a bit of time. I imagine you are feeling sharper and clearer in your mind than the last time you can remember and have leaned out a good amount, some maybe even drastic. Expect that you will gain some of the weight back, but you can control what kind of weight it is, i.e fat or muscle.

Okay, now let’s get to what foods to gradually introduce back into your system. For the first week after fasting, you will want to stick with a lot of fruits and vegetables, especially for the first 3 or so days. This is important because your body is now primed to absorb the most out of the foods you eat, so you will not want to be eating meats, dairy or high in fat foods or your body is going to take all the fat and other nasty stuff in those foods and store it thinking it may go into another state of ketosis. These are also the very same foods that caused so much build-up in your body. I have provided you with a list of some of the things you may want to start off with and what you definitely want to steer clear of. Now is also a good time to adjust yourself to eating 4-6 smaller spaced out meals per day than the “traditional” 3 meal per day. Your body can only handle approximately 300 calories for every 3 hours. So if you eat 3 times per day with 650 + calories per sitting, the extra 350+ calories gets stored, contrary to the belief that your body will just use those calories after it has burned through the first 300. When you eat say 5-6 meals of 300 calories, your body will use up most of those calories. It’s all about efficiency!

What foods to eat:

Salads - Watch what dressing, if any, you use. I recommend very light dressings that are not creamy or heavy in oils. The best would be to use fresh lemon/lime juice mix with some herbs and light spices. I also like a roasted red pepper/tomato vinaegrette with just a small amount of olive oil.

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables -You have your pick of the litter here. Go nuts on these and find the ones you enjoy the most. Also don’t be afraid to try some new ones. With your vegetables, try to eat them raw or if prepared, do a light steamed variety (avoid oversteaming as this ruins some of their nutritional value). Avoid any butters and salt on your veggies.

NOTE: Wash your fruits and vegetables very thoroughly to cleanse any bacteria, waxes or pesticides that may still be on them, EVEN if you are eating organic fruits and vegetables!

Whole Grains - Go light on these for the first week due to their high carbohydrate count. Stick with one serving portions per eating. Some good ones are brown rice and multi-grain pastas. Have fun with tomato sauces on your pasta, but watch the sodium and stay away from creamy or alfredo style sauces. Additionally, you can go with a pasta primavera but a lot of these use insane amounts of oils to make. Substitute lemon juice with some red wine vinegar instead. Use herbs and spices (except salt) freely.

Beans - High in natural fiber, virtually fat free and an excellent alternative source for protein. You can choose any you like, my favorites include black, cannelini, pinto, red and lentils. Try them in soups, pastas or just cooked and seasoned.

Fish and Turkey - Try these lean healthy alternatives to other forms of meat. Careful with the amount of fish you consume and try to steer clear of seafood with high cholesterol such as shrimp, lobster, etc. I am sure you have seen news articles questioning the amounts of mercury and toxins present in some of our seafood supply. You can look for the farm-raised varieties of fish.

Eggs and Yogurt - Generally, I recommend cutting dairy foods out of your diet completely, these 2 being a slight exception. I say slight because you need to take care to either prepare them properly or to limit intake. When consuming eggs, choose a high quality natural or organic egg (I like Eggland’s Best, found in grocery stores in my area. Their chickens are fed organic grains and feed and not injected with egg producing hormones). Also, use ONLY the egg white, throw out the yolk (this is where over 98% of the cholesterol in an egg is and very minimal in protein). Egg whites are one of the compatible types of proteins for our bodies, meaning they are most usable. Look for yogurts that have good counts of pro-biotics in them. Pro-biotics are the building blocks for the enzymes that reside in our intestinal tract and help with proper digestion. At the same time, being of the dairy class, limit your intake of yogurts. One serving a day is more than plenty and also look for all-natural or organic yogurts. What good is yogurt if it comes from a cow injected with bovine growth hormones?

Nuts - Packed with all kinds of good things! Protein and good cholesterol to name just a couple. As with all things, moderation is key, because nuts are also high in fats. A handful (spaced out through the day) of cashews, peanuts, almonds etc. can contribute to a healthy heart. Look for the non-salted varieties. Try making your own trail mixes by eating them with dried fruits such as raisins, cherries, apricots or whatever else you like.

What foods to avoid:

Meats, such as, Beef, chicken and pork.

Dairy products like milk, cheeses and especially ice cream (boooo! I know.).

Any processed foods - the preservatives and additives can kill you alone. You can also add artificial sweeteners of any kind to the list. If you need sweeteners, stick with raw/organic/brown sugars or honey. Believe me, you will be much better off in the long run!

Cooking oils - best to stick with olive oil as your main one and even then try to limit the amounts you use. Get yourself one of the oil sprayers on the market. These can help to “spread” your olive oil better and use less amounts. Definitely avoid any vegetable or canola oils.

I have been asked many times about what is the right way to do a body detoxification and why is it so important. First, let’s take a look at why doing an annual body flush can help to improve your overall health. Many people can attest to how much I discuss and am concerned about the state of our environment and its impact on our health and well-beings, in fact one of my biggest interests has to do with Body Burden Testing. I won’t go into too much detail regarding it, but I do have some links to articles on Body Burden Testing that I will post soon. If you can, spend some time reading up on it and also show your support for the California legislation currently being considered to allow the general population to have Body Burden Testing performed as part of their medical /civilian rights. Anyway, back to the topic and let me wrap it up in the smallest nutshell I can.

Why do a Body Flush?

Basically, we are exposed to thousands of different chemicals and toxins a day through the air we breathe, the water we may drink/shower in, the foods we eat, the cars and industries that release CO2’s and noxious gases to the medications, “health” products and plastics our drinks and foods may come in. In a way you can call our bodies “sponges”; we absorb through our internal (lungs, intestines, blood, etc) and external (skin) systems and once full we release some out. Generally, our bodies are normally pretty efficient in the processing, breaking down and eliminating of toxins and waste out of our systems. Generally meaning if we weren’t exposed to an overload! Which we are in today’s environment. So, our bodies being the efficient systems they are will even store excess toxins and chemicals that need to be further metabolized and eliminated, but seldom does the opportunity arrive because we are just being further bombarded each day with more toxins and they subsequently just end building up in our bodies. Some of the preferred places your body likes to store these are in fat cells (they keep them nice and warm there :-)), our tissues, blood and organs such as the liver, kidney, brain and of course our intestinal lining. As these toxins build up within our systems they begin to have detrimental effects on our health. Plaque and residues build up and provide the perfect breeding grounds for parasitic growths (yes, parasites !) that damage us further and lead to illnesses and disease. Furthermore, the buildup blocks our body’s ability to properly absorb nutrients from our food and supplements, causing deficiencies over time. If your concerned about premature aging or slowing your aging, then body flushes should be as routine as a physical. Suffice it to say that the real question isn’t about why one should do a body flush more how often should someone do it. My suggestion is after you do your first one, they should be done annually. Some may feel the need to do them twice a year depending on how well they know their bodies and sense the need. Please make a careful note of this next statement: Body flushing is NOT meant to be a crash diet weight loss method and doing a body flush should only serve as a starting point of an overall LIFESTYLE CHANGE. When done properly though, it will burn quite a bit of fat (and muscle), but it is even more important what you do and eat AFTER the body flush.

What are Some of the Benefits?

Eliminate toxins, chemicals and metallics (like mercury and lead). Recent group testing showed positive traces of 432 out of 528 chemicals in adult humans! Click here for the full study

Slow aging by eliminating these major contributors to premature cellular degeneration.

Remove plaque and residue buildup on intestinal walls. Leads to better absorbency of nutrients and prevent deficiencies.

Improved mental clarity and energy levels! If you have never done a body flush before, be prepared to see some very nice improvements in these areas.

Loss of excess, toxin coddling fat and better overall tone and physique. You may most notice stubborn pockets of fat substantially reduced/eliminated and your abdominal and midsection areas more toned.

Prevent illness and disease by ridding the body of harmful parasites.

What You Will Need

There are numerous different methods of performing body detoxifications, some that allow eating of certain foods and some that even come as a kit. I prefer the all natural method combined with the eliminating of food completely while detoxifying. Below here, I have provided a checklist of things I highly recommend you want to have to help ease and manage through the fasting / cleansing process:

1. A lot of Distilled or Pure Water. Drink at least 64 ounces a day (8 x 8 ounce glasses).

Water is absolutely essential during the process. Do not drink tap water (chlorine and other chemicals are present from the treatment process). Water acts as the main component of your body’s purification system. It helps to flush toxins and chemicals. Whatever you do, do not skimp on your water! Your body is adaptive and depriving it of water will actually trigger it to hold on to water (goes into survival mode). You want a nice consistent flow of fluids entering and leaving your body. It is easy to tell if you are getting enough fluids by the clarity of your urine. The clearer the better!

2. A Variety of Herbal Teas. Quality herbal teas have long been known for their healing and therapeutic values. I personally love teas and believe they should be a staple in our diets. I have listed some herbal teas I use when doing a body detox and their reasons or benefits.

For aid in detoxification: Dr. Stuart’s Detox or Liver Detox teas. Yogi Peach Detox or Detox.

For stomach ease and laxative aid: Yogi Fasting or Ginger tea (ease hunger pains). Dr. Stuart’s Lax Plus or Yogi Get Regular (laxative)

For Anti-oxidant support: Yogi Berry Anti-oxidant, Green Tea Active Body or Green Tea Super Anti-oxidant

I personally recommend these 2 tea companies as they have the highest quality all natural herbs and I can attest to their potency, especially the Yogi Get Regular :-). I also like “Good Earth” organic teas so they would also be a nice alternative. Try to avoid coffee (decaf if you must) and absolutely keep caffeine intake to a minimum. Stick to water and teas as your fluids. No soft drinks, sport drinks or fruit drinks and especially no artificial sweeteners! If you need a little sweetener for your tea, use organic / raw sugar (just a little) or even better some pure honey.

3. A High Quality Multi-Vitamin and Other Supplements. Since you will not be eating during the fasting process, it is extra important to make sure your body is still getting the nutrients it needs. Using a multi-vitamin will help tremendously to ease some of the “deficient” feelings when your fasting and gives your body a pure, concentrated form of vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients to support systemic functioning. Remember you are “starving” your body. For a multi-vitamin, I recommend Xtend-Life’s Total Balance for Men or Women. The benefit of these is they have additional detoxifying properties to them all while providing necessary vitamins and minerals. Micro-Nutra’s Vita-Male and Vita-Female are an excellent alternative. Both are more of a multi-nutrient than a multi-vitamin. You may also want to use the Xtend-Life Natural Energy to help with some of the fatigue or low energy levels you may experience while fasting. Natural Energy provides a nice, steady flow of energy release throughout the day and also has additional beneficial enzymes and amino acids, which you still want to provide your body while fasting / detoxifying.

4. An All Natural Fiber Supplement. Finally, the last thing you will need is a quality fiber supplement. I use Yerba Prima’s Colon Care fiber supplement with great results. Basically, during fasting, the plaque lining your body will start to break away and will need to be eliminated. That is where your fiber supplement comes in handy. Fiber, of course, helps to “scrub” your system and this will help to further loosen up the residues in your body. The fiber supplement will also act as an absorbent of toxins and chemicals that your body will be releasing and will then carry them out with other body waste.

Ok, What Do I Do Now?

An effective body detoxification routine should take anywhere from 3 days to a week. Most people will find, that if you follow this routine, 4-6 days should do well in getting you cleaned out. Once you have done your initial cleanse, as noted above, it’s a good idea to make it an annual routine and should then only require a 3 day flush (use your judgment as you get to know your body). You should first plan the date of when you are going to begin. Please do not go gorging on food prior to fasting :-). Eat normally up to the day you begin. Here is an ingestion schedule to follow:

1. Morning time approx. 8am- take either (2) Xtend-Life Total Balance or (1) Micro-Nutra Vita-Male / Vita-Female and (2) Xtend-Life Natural Energy (optional, but recommended). Drink at least 1 cup each of an Anti-oxidant tea and a Detox tea and 2-3 servings of water up to afternoon time. NOTE: When preparing your tea, steep teabag in hot water for AT LEAST 5 minutes. It is best to cover the mug while steeping. This ensures all the good stuff in the tea gets released. “Press” out the teabag to drain. Take one serving of your fiber supplement.

2. Afternoon time approx. 2pm- take either (2) more Xtend-Life Total Balance and (2) more Natural Energy. If you take Vita-Male or Vita-Female, do not take another. Follow with (1) cup of Anti-oxidant tea and 2-3 more servings of water. I recommend taking in the majority of your water requirements prior to 7pm at night to avoid waking to urinate. You can opt to drink any of the Yogi teas to help with stomach hunger pains at any time you feel like your starving.

3. Evening time approx. 8pm- take your last (2) Xtend-Lifes for the day. Do not take the Natural Energy. Drink at least one cup of Detox tea and some water. Right before going to bed, take another serving of your fiber supplement and have 1 cup of a natural laxative tea. If you are sensitive to the laxative tea, try diluting it or start by drinking half of a cup.

The first day and a half will probably not be much fun as your body is adjusting to lack of food. By the end of the second day, your body should have started to adjust and the hunger pains will ease or subside completely. Your body is going into the state of ketosis. Ketosis is when your body is not getting carbohydrates to burn as energy and such will gradually switch itself over to burning your fat as an energy source. This is very good because as your body burns its fat, the toxins and chemicals stored in them will be released into your system for elimination. Please note, your body will also burn muscle during this time as well. You will probably notice you will urinate frequently (if you are taking in your recommended fluids) and this a good thing. It is possible that you may become temporarily “constipated” for a day or two, but don’t worry, things will get moving. You may want to increase your fiber supplement to 2 servings morning and night. Right around the fourth day, you may notice that each time you go to the bathroom (#2), when you are finished you feel as if you have a burst in energy and mental clarity. This is also good, it’s a positive sign that the toxins weighing you down are coming out. If you cease to have bowel movements for a couple of days, continue on the fast until things get moving and they will. You will want to let your body decide how many days to go through the detox process. If you’ve never detoxed before, you’ll definitely want to do at least 4 days. 6 days are probably more than sufficient. An alternative would also be to do a 4-5 day cleanse and then follow it up in a month’s time with a 3 day. After your cleanse, I feel confident that you will be very happy with the results. You will most likely feel more energetic, sharper mental acuity and general overall sense of well-being and the benefits can last for a substantial time afterwards.

Hopefully by now you have read “Why Take a Supplement?” and have seen some possibly disturbing health facts. Now comes the question, “how do I choose the right supplement?” or perhaps, “what should I look for in a quality supplement?”.

So let’s take a look at some of the important factors you want in a multi-vitamin or supplement:

1. The quality and control of the ingredients that go into it. For example, are you aware that over 90% of vitamin/supplement “manufacturers” DO NOT even make their own. This has become a deceiving practice in not just the supplement market but in other markets as well. This is what really happens, a company wants to sell vitamins or supplements (or TV’s, laptops, even cars etc.), but they do not have the manufacturing facilities nor do they have the desire to set one up because all they need to do is “contract” a manufacturer of supplements who will create a product for them that they can stick THEIR BRAND on it. The distributor does not make the supplement, all they do is MARKET the supplement.

Unfortunately, what this does is not allow the BRAND company to control the actual ingredients or their quality. Sadly, these manufacturers and distributors only seem to care about their bottom lines. Costs and quality are cut everywhere to ensure the companies are highly profitable. Has anyone recently seen all the articles of generic drugs, with none of the medication it is supposed to have in it or even worse, cases of toxins and poisons replacing those ingredients, being made in China (and other countries, yes even in the US) that are invading our market? Simply put, if a supplement company does not develop and produce their own supplements in a strict, sterile laboratory environment, then they cannot control where the ingredients and the quality of them come from.

One other thing about quality of ingredients. The manner and sources in which the herbs, minerals, vitamins, etc. are harvested has a direct correlation of its potency or what is known as its “bio-availability”. Also, especially herbs and fish oils (for Omega 3 supplements) must come from a natural environment free of the pollutants and chemicals that shroud our beloved Earth. What good would it do to take an Omega 3 supplement if the oil harvested was from fish that lived in a mercury laden ocean? I think you get the point

2. The delivery “system” of the supplement to the parts of your body where they are a.) the nutrients are not destroyed by stomach acids and b.) most readily absorbed for maximum intake and benefit. First, let me explain where nutrients are best absorbed, which is the small intestine. Most people may think that nutrients are absorbed through the stomach walls; our stomachs are much simpler organs than that. The primary function of your stomach is to contain food you eat and mix it with bile to break the food down BEFORE it enters your small intestine. Basically it just “preps” food into smaller particles and when they enter the small intestine, the small intestine absorbs nutrients from the broken down particles. In fact, the small intestine is where the majority of nutrient (or toxins, preservatives, additives and medications) ingestion takes place and then makes it way through your body via your circulation system.

So why do I bring this up? Well again, over 90% of the supplements on the market are either destroyed before ever getting to the small intestine or the ingredients they say are in it lack potency (due to the inferior quality in the first place) or are not even present in the supplement. The reason most are destroyed is due to the manufacturer not producing the supplement with what is known as an enteric coating. An enteric (meaning small intestine) coating is a special coating, primarily used in the pharmaceutical industry due to its high cost, that protects the ingredients in a pill (or in this case a supplement) from the harsh acidic environment present in the stomach. It allows the supplement to pass through the stomach intact but once it reaches the alkaline environment in the small intestine, it breaks down, releasing the nutrients at the point they are most beneficially absorbed. Most supplements do not have an enteric coating and thus the vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients never get to the small intestine in bio-available form and simply pass out of your body as waste. So when searching for a supplement, the best and most effective ones will have an enteric coating; do not worry about the enteric coating remaining in your body, once broken down it will pass harmlessly through your body and be eliminated.

3. A couple of other things to look for when choosing a supplement:

A.) Any quality supplement will have what is called a COA or Certificate of Analysis, which will label the exact ingredients and their amounts that are present in the supplement. Think of it as a guarantee that what you are buying is really what it is. Just as a note, all the supplements on this website have COA’s.

B.) Be extra careful to look for any artificial ingredients (for flavor) or dyes (for coloring) present. Avoid any supplement that has either one. Stick to the supplements that have proven NATURAL ingredients in them.

C.) Make sure the manufacturing process takes place in an environment that follows the FDA’s GMP (Good Manufacturing Process). Just like using mercury-laden fish for Omega 3 supplements, what good is it if a supplement that is supposed to be health beneficial to you is produced in a tainted, uncontrolled environment (more common than you may have thought)?

Lastly, when starting all supplementation regiments, you should visit your physician and if possible, show him the labels of the supplements you are taking. Be your best, live well!

This is an intensely debated question among many health conscious people. Many people, and they are correct, state that you can get all the proper nutrients your body needs through proper diet. Therein lies the problem itself; most of us simply do not have the time to prepare 4-6 meals a day that provide the necessary intake of essential vitamins and minerals. This shows in the latest statistics:

19 out of 20 people will die from a degenerative disease caused by nutritional deficiency! (and they are all preventable!)

75% of the 2.4 million deaths that occur in the US annually are the direct result of nutritional factor disease!

On top of that studies also show the quality of our food supply is no longer what it used to be. Over-processed foods with little or no nutrition value crowd the shelves of our food markets. The use of preservatives, additives, dyes and pesticides are prevalent in the food industry and the foods we eat today are loaded with them. These artificial chemicals are showing to contribute to many cancers, diseases and worst yet they are effecting our children. Studies have shown how artificial dyes, such red #40, cause emotional and behavioral problems in our children. You see today the high rates of ADD and ADHD diagnoses that are occurring (and the ensuing dosages of unnecessary/dangerous prescription medications). Imagine the long-term implications of consuming these toxins (studies are just coming out showing the harmful effects of ingesting these chemicals as more awareness is spreading).

This all brings us back to our question of why taking a supplement is vital to your health and well-being! Remember this…not all vitamins and supplements are equal. In fact, over 90% of the supplements on the market today have little to no benefits due to their inferior ingredients and more importantly, the method in which the body absorbs the nutrients in a supplement. In the world we live in today, with all the toxins and chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis and our bodies absorb, taking a high quality supplement could very well serve to save and extend your life.

Maintain Proper Nutrition and Supplementation

Perhaps one of the most effective things you can do if you suffer from depression is ensuring you are receiving your daily dietary and nutritional needs. Most people who suffer from depression also have a “disinterest” in eating or loss of appetite. When you are not eating properly, your body’s chemical balance will be thrown off due to lack of proper nutrition. Lack of proper nutrition can lead to serious chronic disease such as high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, cancer and osteoporosis. Since most of us cannot get the necessary nutrients our bodies need through diet alone, it is highly recommended to enhance your diet with high quality vitamins and supplements.

Recommended Supplementation:

Multi-Vitamin - Xtend-Life Total Balance for Men / Women or Micro-Nutra Vita-Male / Vita-Female

+

Natural Supplement - Xtend-Life GLM-Omega 3 Plus and / or

Natural Supplement - Xtend-Life Neuro Natural Serenity

Exercise Regularly

Exercise helps to release your body’s own natural anti-depressant chemicals called endorphins. In addition, exercise also helps to regulate and balance hormones, increase cardiovascular functioning/efficiency and control weight.

Recommended Exercise:

Brisk, sustained walking is low impact and can bring tremendous benefits. It is simply one of the best exercises you can do. It helps to regulate hormones and metabolism and can keep your weight under control due to its consistent fat burning qualities and keeps your heart in the desired target range better than running.

Weight bearing exercise is essential for building and maintaining proper muscle mass and bone density. At least 3 times a week, you should perform weight bearing exercises with a minimum 48 hour rest period between each workout to allow for proper muscle recuperation.

If you would like more details on a recommended exercise plan, please see my personal workout regimen. (Coming soon!)

Increase Social Contact and Support Systems

One of the worst things, in my opinion, to do if you are suffering from depression is to isolate yourself from other people. We are naturally born to create and build relationships in our lives. Without these relationships, we can feel empty and this in turn can create low self-esteem. Healthy interpersonal relationships can go a long way towards providing the social outlet we all need. When we interact with one another, we develop positive, health enhancing skills that contribute to our overall physical and mental well-being.

Recommendations:

Focus on doing things that bring you enjoyment.

Lean on friends and family, they are your support system!

Do not isolate yourself, get out and push yourself to interact with others. It will do wonders!

Work on personal development. Find your own sense of self worth and contribution in life. Don’t rely on others to validate your worth, create your own!

Do not be afraid to go for therapy

It is staggering to think that approximately 80% of people who suffer from depression do not seek treatment. Many feel that depression is a weakness, especially men. Nothing could be further from the truth. It takes great strength to admit when you need help. So instead of looking at getting help as a weakness, try looking at it as though you are strong enough to know when you need to ask for help.

Recommendations:

Find a professional who can help. Take the time to research and “interview” potential practitioners. Make sure to choose the one you feel will provide the structure and support you need. Your relationship with your practitioner is just as important as the therapy you are receiving.
